02Rules at a glance
Marion fence rules
- Permit
- No building permit for residential fences up to 7 ft tall. The city's zoning rules on height and placement still apply.
- Heights
- Up to 6 ft in required yards and along lot lines.
- Front yards
- No solid privacy fence in a required front yard. A fence counts as solid when it blocks half or more of the light.
- Corner side yards
- A solid fence can go in a corner side yard, or the back of a double-fronted lot, if it's at least 12 ft from any driveway, alley or the back of the curb.
- Corner lots
- Nothing that blocks drivers' view inside the triangle 30 ft from the corner.
- Easements
- Fences in drainage or sanitary sewer easements need extra city approval (a hold harmless agreement). We check your plat.
- Utilities
- Iowa One Call (811) before anything goes into the ground, even our driven steel posts. We file it. Sprinkler and pet-fence lines are yours to mark.
- HOAs
- Check your HOA's rules too. Send them to us and we'll match them.
Checked Nov 3, 2026. Rules change, so we confirm with the city before every job. Source: City of Marion: Residential Fences (Code of Ordinances 340-10.4 and 340-10.5).
